Meeting People Where They Are

This summer marked the launch of Redemption City's Street Outreach Program, made possible through funding from the Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG). Each week, our outreach team travels throughout Western Sussex County to meet individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness where they are—on the streets, in wooded areas, in their carsunder bridges, and in places many people never see.

Outreach is about far more than handing out water or hygiene supplies. It's about building relationships, earning trust, and helping people take the next step toward stability when they're ready.

Sometimes that next step is as simple as accepting a meal or learning where to take a shower. Other times, it's replacing an ID, connecting with healthcare, applying for employment, or visiting the North Star Navigation Center for the first time.

Recently, one conversation during outreach led a young woman to visit the North Star Navigation Center the very next day. Within the same week, she chose to enter the Sunshine House and begin her journey toward stability. While every story unfolds differently and lasting change often takes time, moments like these remind us why consistent outreach matters.

The people we meet aren't defined by their current circumstances. They are neighbors with unique stories, strengths, and hopes for the future. By showing up week after week, we create opportunities for relationships to grow and for trust to replace fear and uncertainty.

That's what outreach is really about.

It's meeting people where they are—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—and reminding them that they are seen, valued, and never beyond hope.
