When the Temperature Drops, Compassion Matters More Than Ever

12 Days. Countless Ways to Give. | Day 3

Cold weather means different things to different people.

For some, it means cozy blankets, warm drinks, and the comfort of coming home after a long day.

For others, it means wondering where they will sleep tonight, whether their clothing will keep them warm, and how they will endure another night outdoors.

For individuals experiencing homelessness, winter introduces challenges that can quickly become life-threatening.

The Reality of Winter Without Stable Housing

When someone lacks a safe, warm place to sleep, freezing temperatures and prolonged exposure can pose serious health risks.

Even those staying temporarily in vehicles or other unsuitable locations may struggle to stay warm and dry.

Winter clothing, blankets, and access to shelter become essential.

This is why Redemption City's seasonal North Star Nights program is such an important part of our work.

Beginning December 1, North Star Nights will once again provide low-barrier overnight shelter during the coldest months of the year, helping individuals access safety, warmth, and human connection.

Warmth Is More Than a Temperature

At Redemption City, we believe warmth is also something people experience through compassion.

It is found in a welcoming environment, a familiar face, a respectful conversation, and the knowledge that someone cares whether you make it through the night.

A pair of dry socks can bring physical comfort. A safe place to sleep can provide much-needed rest. A welcoming interaction can remind someone that they haven't been forgotten.

These moments matter.

How You Can Help

As we prepare for the upcoming winter season, we invite our community to help provide essential cold-weather supplies.

Warm coats, new socks, gloves, hats, and approved blankets are examples of items that can make a meaningful difference.

Churches, civic groups, businesses, and families can organize collections or contribute financially toward winter shelter operations.

We encourage donors to contact Redemption City regarding current needs and accepted items before organizing larger collections.

A Season of Compassion

The coldest months of the year should remind us how much we depend on one another.

Most of us will never know what it feels like to wonder whether we can safely endure another night outside.

But we can choose to care about those who do.

This winter, help us make sure warmth isn't a privilege reserved for those who have a home.

Give the gift of warmth. Give the gift of compassion. Give someone a safer night.
